Home Care Orientation

Home Care Orientation is designed for family caregivers and Home Support /Personal Care workers. This module is the first of six modules of the CARE-ED Home Care curriculum.

Module 1: Home Care Orientation Program

Session 1:  Qualities of Caregivers/The Aging Process/Communicating with the Elderly  This session deals with the clarification of the role of the Home Support Worker and the identification of characteristics which will help participants develop successful caregiving careers.  Aging is a gradual response to life's influences.  Normal physical changes are identified in this session as well as factors which can affect mental health as one ages.  Effective exchange of information between caregivers and the elderly can be challenging especially when special communication needs are present.  Communications skills and factors which act as roadblocks will also be examined. Call 1-800-561-2463.

Session 2:  Caregivers Need Care Too  This session is designed to raise awareness of the need for caregivers to take care of themselves while caring for others.  Participants are asked to identify and classify potential stressors of caregiving and to identify strategies for coping with stress.

Session 3:  Nutrition and the Role of the Caregiver  It is essential that caregivers maintain good nutrition and safe food preparation practices.  Canada's Food Guide is reviewed in light of the challenges presented in meeting dietary needs of the elderly.  Shopping, food storage, hand washing, food preparation, serving and clean-up are all addressed in this session.

Session 4:  Back Injury Prevention  It is essential that caregivers have a basic knowledge of body mechanics to prevent work-related injuries.  Participants are taught to use their bodies in a way which prevents muscle strain both at work and at home.

Session 5:  Client and Caregiver Safety   10% of Canadians over 65 experience injuries in the home.  The role of the caregiver in creating and maintaining safe living and working environment is addressed.  The safe use of wheelchairs, walkers and canes is included.

Session 6:  Providing Personal Care    This session addresses the fears and needs of those receiving personal care as well as the privilege afforded the caregiver in providing personal care.  Toileting, skin care, mouth care, turning, positioning and range of motion exercises are included.
